Types of Acoustic Suspended Ceilings

If you are seriously interested in acoustic suspended ceilings, then it helps to learn a little bit about the two types of tiles that are on the market. Understanding them better will enable you to make the right choice based on your needs and how they match up to the tile properties. The two types of acoustic tiles are sound reflectors and sound absorbers.

Sound Reflectors

As the name suggests, a sound reflecting tile bounces back the sound. This keeps it contained in the room. This could be great for instances where your main goal is to keep sound in without any concern about how it actually sounds in the room. Basically, ceilings made of this type of tile would be good for containing noise.

Sound Absorbers

Sound absorbing tiles are, again as suggested by the name, good at absorbing noise. This is most likely what people think of when they think of acoustic suspended ceilings. These tiles stop echoing and keep sound contained while also keeping the sound down inside the actual room. These tiles would be good for rooms that are used a lot and where noise control is needed.

Choosing Tiles

Obviously, you have to look at your own needs when choosing a type of tile. The main difference between the tiles is the sound inside the room. They both will help to keep sound from bleeding out of the room, but reflectors contain it all in the room while absorbers will suck it up. Generally, if you are going to be using a room, you would want to use an absorber to make the room comfortable. However, a reflector may better suit your needs.

When it comes to designing acoustic suspended ceilings, you need to first think about the type of tile you’ll be using. The tile will have a great effect on the overall soundproofing, so make your choice wisely.
